Smart locks and keypads both get rid of the “who has a copy of the key?” problem. But they’re not the same thing, and not every lock fits every door.
The difference in one line
A keypad lock opens with a code. A smart lock connects to your phone, so you can lock, unlock, and share access from an app, and many also have a keypad.
Will it fit your door?
Compatibility depends on the door and the hardware already on it. Most standard deadbolt doors are easy. Some doors, especially in older buildings and storefronts, use different lock bodies that only work with specific models. That’s why it pays to have the door checked before you buy.
What installation includes
Mounting the lock is only part of it. Setup can include programming, creating user codes, and connecting the lock to your phone or home system.
We handle the full setup, from programming to codes.
Habits that keep it secure
- Give each person their own code, so you can remove one without changing everyone’s
- Change codes when someone moves out or leaves a job
- Most smart locks run on batteries, so replace them when the low-battery warning shows up
- Keep the backup key somewhere safe, not under the mat
Renting?
Ask your landlord before swapping the lock. Many are fine with it as long as they get access.
